Invitation to join

For: All masters and PhD students

SandroLead Advisor: Sandro Leidi, MSc, University of Reading

Sandro is a senior statistician and director of e-learning at the Statistical Service Centre at the University of Reading. He uses modern statistical modelling techniques, and as a consultant advises on all aspects of statistical work ranging from large-scale data crunching to devising training programmes for institutional capacity building in a range of large organisations. Sandro regularly trains research students at the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Animal Health.

5 courses / 4 faculty versions

Five 12.5 hour online courses to provide masters and phd students with the statistics they need to complete their research projects. There will be four faculty versions of each course (Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities, Science & Engineering, Medicine).Sandro is a senior statistician and director of e-learning at the Statistical Service Centre at the University of Reading. He uses modern statistical modelling techniques, and as a consultant advises on all aspects of statistical work ranging from large-scale data crunching to devising training programmes for institutional capacity building in a range of large organisations. Sandro regularly trains research students at the John Innes Centre and the Institute of Animal Health, and states:

The 5 courses are:

  • RS 001: Introduction
  • RS 002: Descriptive statistics
  • RS 003: Confidence intervals
  • RS 004: Hypothesis tests
  • RS 005: Statistical modelling

Introduction

Epigeum's new collaboration is for Masters and PhD students who require a foundation course in statistics for research.

It will adapt an existing highly successful course, which has recorded an average improvement in students' performance of 122%

Whether the students need a course that starts from scratch or want more confidence in statistics these e-courses meets their needs:

  • Compatible with blended, or online tutor supported delivery
  • Optional peer-to-peer online forums and interaction
  • Aims to teach conceptual understanding
  • Geared to practical applications

The Opportunity

A recent report shows that "computer-assisted statistics instruction provided a meaningful average performance advantage" over face to face classes1. With tightening universities budgets, online statistics training is not only cost-effective, it is arguably better than conventional classroom teaching.

Epigeum have partnered with Sandro Leidi of the University of Reading, to adapt and improve his highly successful, online tutor supported, web-based statistics course, into four new faculty versions. Students taking this course at Reading increased their average statistics relate performance by 122%, with a doubling of statistical capacity.

University departments that can benefit from the project

  • Those responsible for providing research skills training for PhD or Masters students
  • Libraries
  • Vice-Provosts for Education

Invitation to join the Development Group

We are seeking a group of enthusiastic universities to participate in the project; our 13th such collaboration in six years.

Joining an Epigeum development group allows you to secure content for significantly less than the cost of developing it in-house, or purchasing a subsequent annual license from Epigeum.

If you join, your role will be to peer review the content as developed. Epigeum project manages the entire development process and also underwrites a significant portion of the costs.

If you are interested, please contact us (hyper link to wendy’s email) as soon as possible as places will go fast.

Who else is involved?

The Lead Advisor is Dr Sandro Leidi, Senior Statistician at the University of Reading. Dr Leidi wrote, and currently delivers, the online course that the collaboration will adapt.

A founding group of seven universities is also coming together to support the project inception.
