There are few researchers who do not wish to see their research result in societal benefit. The importance of the knowledge economy and judicious use of constrained public finances has inevitably lead to a greater focus on research impact. The recently completed REF has focused attention on this agenda as never before and impact is likely to be an increasing feature of future research assessment exercises. Enhancing Research Impact is therefore not only timely but of crucial importance if the full benefits of research are to be realised.
