‘Consent Matters’ shortlisted for a Learning Technologies Award!

September 29, 2017
We are delighted to announce that our ground-breaking Consent Matters: Boundaries, Respect and Positive Intervention course has been shortlisted for the ‘Excellence in the design of learning content – UK commercial’ sector category of the Learning Technologies Awards 2017.

With over 400 applicants we are excited to have been shortlisted in the final 7 of the category against some huge industry names for one of the most challenging but rewarding courses we have developed.

The opportunity for an online approach

In recent years there has been a high level of attention drawn to the issue of sexual violence in higher education including the publication of The Universities UK (UUK) Taskforce report addressing issues of violence against women, harassment and hate crime in late 2016 and lately the Australian Human Rights Commission Survey National Report on Sexual Assault and Sexual Harassment at Australian Universities in August 2017.

With increased focus on this topic, rising reports of sexual violence and harassment at institutions, and a number of worrying statistics released in survey results, universities are reviewing and redefining their policies on sexual violence. Epigeum began to develop Consent Matters in November 2015 to allow institutions to efficiently scale up their prevention training, complement existing training, provide a consistent approach, and reach a wider number of students. The online nature of the course would allow students to explore the content at their own pace and in a ‘safe space’.

What is Consent Matters?
Consent Matters is a 60-75 minute online course to help students understand sexual consent and promotive positive change in the university community. This interactive course is positive not punitive and addresses prevention of sexual violence in the student community – covering the areas of sexual consent, communication, and bystander intervention. The course published in July 2016, and is now being used by 40 universities around the world to provide an innovative online approach to prevention education including 21 institutions in Australia and 16 in the UK.
