HE teaching: 6 challenges and 6 reasons to feel excited

May 18, 2019

As we approach the publication of our new online training programme, University Teaching: Core Skills, we visited the institutions which contributed to its development to explore the highs and lows of higher education teaching today.

Increasing student numbers, shifting classroom dynamics, conflicting professional responsibilities, and mounting pressure to evidence effectiveness… Teaching and learning support staff face significant challenges in today’s higher education environment – some of which are discussed in this video.

Student-led learning, new styles of assessment, technological innovation and increasing levels of diversity – there are plenty of reasons to feel excited about higher education teaching in the future, and this video explores some of those highlights.

Coming soon: University Teaching: Core Skills

Developed in collaboration with international experts and institutions, this flexible and interactive ‘teaching toolkit’, made up of 6 stand-alone strands, addresses growing trends in higher education, including student wellbeing, employability, and online learning – ensuring that new, early career, and part-time teaching and learning support staff are equipped to tackle known challenges and take advantage of future opportunities.

Publishing in July 2019, the programme also supports teaching and learning support staff applying for Associate Fellowship with Advance HE. Advance HE is providing expert guidance on the development of the resource to ensure best practices and accurate alignment with the Professional Standards Framework, leading to approval through HEA review and approval processes.
